In fact, the character signing the song is actually Greg’s frog (also known as Kitty/Wirt/George Washington/Benjamin/Jason Funderburker) – who plays the piano intro of the song and is only revealed to actually have a singing voice much later, in episode six, “Lullaby in Frogland”. Reflective of the ensemble-like nature of the show, the animation that accompanies “Into the Unknown” (in other words the first bit of the show viewers see) shows off more minor characters that major. By introducing viewers to the show in this manner, “Into the Unknown” instills a sense of both whimsy and mystery, drawing viewers in as they too enter the Unknown along with Greg and Wirt. Spoilers for Over the Garden Wall under the cutĪ clever way of foreshadowing a great deal of the show, “Into the Unknown” serves as viewers' first introduction to Over the Garden Wall, both lyrically and visually setting up the overall tone of the show.
